Welcome to Science

Click on the links on the right for more information.

The Science Department at Avonbourne School aims to deliver a broad and balanced Science Curriculum through high quality teaching.  We believe that students of all ages and abilities should be given the opportunity to explore and enjoy the scientific world in a supportive and encouraging environment.  In order to achieve this we have high expectations of our students as learners, and of ourselves as teachers.

Accommodation and Staffing

Science is taught in eight well resourced laboratories all located in the same area within the school. Seven of the laboratories have interactive whiteboards with access to the internet.

There are currently nine teachers and three laboratory technicians working in the department.

Sam Learning makes a difference!

This programme is available to all students in and out of school for free. Students using SAM Learning develop a strong revision habit and improved exam technique. This increased confidence is reflected in improved results. Give it a try.

Avonbourne launches first test rockets

Science and Engineering Club enthusiasts have launched the first test rockets on the school field.

The aim is to design a rocket to fly as high, as straight and land as safely as possible. The rockets are launched from a compressed air launcher that releases about 3 bar air pressure (around 43 psi) to fire the pupil’s rockets to over 30 metres in the air. Initial tests proved successful after a few initial problems and one damaged rocket.

If any other enthusiastic rocketeers are out there please see Mr Clench or Mr Woodward for details.

It's not rocket science! ...it is actually.
