Pupils are set for Mathematics at Key Stage 4.
GCSE Mathematics is taught in two tiers – Foundation and Higher. We use the AQA Modular GCSE examination (syllabus 4307).
Setting in years 10 and 11
In years 10 and 11, students are split into two bands. Within each band there are six Mathematics sets:
· Sets 1 & 2 will follow the Higher GCSE syllabus
· Sets 3, 4, 5 & 6 will follow the Foundation GCSE syllabus
GCSE Levels and Grades
Level Grades available
Higher A* A B C D
Foundation C D E F G
The course consists of three modules, two completed in Year 10 amounting to 45% of the course and one larger module completed in Year 11 comprising the other 55%. Module exams are sat in November and June in Year 10 and then in June in Year 11. Each exam paper that students sit requires the use of a calculator for part of the exam and we expect students to have a calculator as part of their school equipment. Students are entitled to re-sit each module once with the best mark being submitted.
Textbooks
It is faculty policy that every student is entitled to a textbook, regardless of her ability or level of entry. The textbooks issued are distinct for each level and cover the requirements of the syllabus. It is the responsibility of the student to look after her textbook and to bring it to Mathematics lessons. Students are issued with homework textbooks, which can be kept at home.
Equipment
Students are expected to bring the following items of equipment to each lesson (unless specifically directed otherwise):
- Exercise book & textbook
- A pen, a pencil & a ruler
- Angle measurer & compass
- Scientific calculator
Calculators
All students are required to have a scientific calculator for lessons, homework and for examination purposes. A calculator such as a Casio FX-85ES or a Sharp EL-531 will be adequate and should cost in the region of £6 - £10. In order to help to return it to its rightful owner in the event of it being lost, it is sensible for the calculator to be named clearly with the student’s name.
