Personalised Learning at Avonbourne School is fundamental

The new KS3

Avonbourne has utilised the flexibility that the national curriculum changes have allowed to broaden and enhance the school's curriculum. Students in Yr 7 and 8 have additional lessons on World Literacy and Applied Numeracy (click on the links for more info) to reinforce the importance of literacy and numeracy and once every two weeks they come off timetable to follow Extended Projects. These are specially designed courses that focus on key themes; Innovation and Discovery, Creative Learning, Enterprise and Global Citizenship.

The KS4 pathways approach - options time!

Avonbourne has been praised by OfSTED for its KS4 curruiculum for its flexibility and diversity. The info below has been taken from the Yr 9 options booklet.

It is not over dramatic to say that the choices students make in Yr 9 will effect the rest of their lives! Seen in this context, it is important that students get the choices right. So that all are best qualified to fit into a modern 21st Century work force, students should ensure that a broad and balanced range of subjects at Key Stage 4 is chosen.

Four Pathways
Not everyone likes the same things, all of us have different strengths and weaknesses, and we all have our own ways in which we perform to the best of our ability. To help select the right courses for you, the option choices have been divided into four different pathways which are suited to the needs of different sorts of students. Which pathway do you fit most naturally into?

It is easy to move from one pathway to another, as there are no brick walls built between them! Students will need to discuss with parents, subject teachers and mentors so that when it is time to choose the correct pathway is selected.

- For students who wish to take the maximum possible number of GCSE’s, are thinking of possible sixth form or college courses and possibly university in the future then pathway 1 or 2 courses are for you.

- For students for whom such a large number of GCSE’s would be too much, and who might benefit from a more vocational set of options, which could include a course at college or extended work experience, there are pathways 3 & 4.

This is just a taster of what Avonbourne has to offer. For more info, contact Mr Shapcott.
