The English Department aims to enable students to become lifelong learners, responsible and successful citizens.

At Avonbourne School, an English classroom is a bright and lively environment where high-quality teaching is provided by "outstanding" (Ofsted 2007) teachers, which encourages creative thinking and successful learning.

In English, our main aim is to enable students to develop advanced skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing so that they become confident in expressing themselves both creatively and imaginatively, and gain understanding and control over language. We want them to enjoy language and use it effectively.

We have very high expectations of our students, both in their achievement and their behaviour.
