The curriculum

At Avonbourne School, we are focused on inspiring students to achieve their potential as 21st Century Global Citizens. We understand that to maximise the potential of all students - to enfranchise them within their education - personalisation of the curriculum is essential.

The curriculum (click here for details) & School’s organisation is fundamental to personalisation and Avonbourne School has developed innovative curriculum models at both KS3 and 4. This includes a flexible pathways approach to enable all learners to access, enjoy and achieve on the many programmes of study on offer both within School and beyond, academic and extra curricular. The detailed Information, Advice and Guidance that students experience is key to this to ensure that students make informed and meaningful decisions and the quality of pastoral support students receive is high, driven by full time Pastoral Heads. Promoting high expectations on the part of the learner and encouraging participation is promoted by all and reinforced by dedicated mentors.

Student voice permeates the school at all levels and contributes to whole-school evaluation and development. Student interview panels, peer mediators, school prefects, an active school council and Young Chamber, a Business and Enterprise initiative linked to the local Chamber of Commerce, are just some examples of how we ensure that students contribute to school life and their voice is heard.

Within the classroom, a school-wide focus on Assessment for Learning ensures that students and teachers are clear about current attainment and future progression. It empowers and enfranchises the learner within the learning process. The development of thinking skills is another key strategy and also a part of that empowerment process, giving insight into the methodology of learning - how we learn - and what contributes to successful learning.

The potential for ICT and other new technologies to contribute to the personalisation of learning is vast and Avonbourne School is proactive. We aim to offer bespoke support for students that recognises and builds upon their diverse strengths, interests and needs. Examples include use of a new Creative Technology Suite (unique to the south of England), a Virtual Learning Environment, interactive whiteboards in all teaching rooms and a range of other e-learning opportunities.

Personalised Learning at Avonbourne School is certainly far reaching and diverse in its many facets, but its importance cannot be understated. Creating independent happy learners, confident and ready for their lives ahead is, after all, what we are about as educators.
