Enterprise week success

Students show off their B&E talents

We’re an enterprising lot at Avonbourne – proven by the girls when they excelled at a range of business activities held during Enterprise Week 17th to 21st November.

The special week is part of a national initiative, with events including Make Your Mark, £10 Turnaround, and International Day. There was also a cultural foods project, a Buddhist workshop, iNet conferencing and a Trash ‘n Fash’n show.

“The normal timetable was suspended for some pupils but all year groups were involved in one way or another¿, said head teacher, Debbie Godfrey-Phaure.

“This is the third annual Enterprise Week we’ve held at Avonbourne and it is integral to our ethos as a Business and Enterprise College."

In the £10 Turnaround competition the girls were given a ten pound budget to come up with a money-making scheme. Eight finalists presented their ideas before a Dragon’s Den panel consisting of representatives from the Bournemouth Daily Echo, Bournemouth University and Dorset Business. The winning team’s idea of selling teachers as slaves will take place next term.

In the Make Your Mark challenge, pupils from secondary schools across the borough came to Avonbourne to take part in a mini enterprise test organised in conjunction with Dorset Skills. Girls also learnt to make Chinese fireworks and immersed themselves in different cultures to take part in Olympic Games.

Avonbourne already has the full International Schools Award 2008-2011 and the CDQS (Cultural Diversity Quality Standard) gold standard, and Portchester is actively working towards the ISA accolade.

“The global dimension is fundamental to learning in the 21st Century," said Mrs Godfrey Phaure.

“It is about success, both academic and social, and about engaging with our world as global citizens, willing to take action in support of our local and global communities."
